So today on Facebook and Twitter I could not even count the number of black women who were celebrating the royal engagement of Meghan Markle to Prince Harry as some sort of breakthrough for the black race. Some of the celebrations were reading, ‘Finally, a black woman in the royal family’, whilst some read, ‘We have made it into the royal family, yay.’
I was sitting there scratching my head with shame and embarrassment. I understand that as black people we are a broken people. We are carrying a lot of baggage and the need for acceptance is deep and raw. But if we ever want to earn respect, we have to start by respecting ourselves.
First of all Meghan Markle is not black. I think we need to establish that before this ‘black royal’ obsession and excitement gets any more embarrassing. Not once has Meghan ever referred to herself as black. And I know black people feel very offended and get sensitive if a mixed race person denies being black, which is very unfair and disrespectful.
Unlike many black people, who want to claim anyone who has a drop of black blood in them as one of them, Meghan does not disregard her white father, hence she refers to her ethnicity as mixed-race. Not black, but bi-racial. There is a big difference. Her father is not invisible.
She says when she was a little girl, her teacher told her to tick the ‘Caucasian’ box and told her that she looked white, so she was white. A confused Meghan could not bring herself to tick the Caucasian box because she could not choose the ethnicity of her father over that of her mother.
So is it not an insult to Meghan when all black people are jubilating calling her black, whilst disregarding her father?
Why is it that black people feel this desperate need to claim people who are not black just to feel important?
At least if Meghan looked black then it could be justified, maybe. The woman does not even look black. She could pass off for being Kim Kardashian’s twin sister for goodness sake. There is no way you can look at her and say she is black.
So why black people are busy celebrating that one of us has finally made it into the royal family is beyond me. Yes her mother is black, that’s important to acknowledge. But Meghan was not born of a virgin Mary. A white man made a black woman pregnant, and behold, Meghan Markle was born. Her father is very important in all this.
I have seen a lot of mixed race people who do not want to identify as black being attacked by black people for denying their race? It’s totally crazy. People who are born to white and black parents should never be forced to be black. Why pigeon-hole their identity and disregard the white parent? How insensitive. I respect mixed-race individuals who identify as black, it’s their respectful choice, but those who do not identify as black should be respected too. It’s nothing to do with denying their race, if they don’t feel black, let them be. If they feel more connected to their white parent, let them be.
Black people, there are enough of us in this world. We are enough. We are adequate. We are complete as a people. This desperate need for acceptance has to stop. We do not need to claim every mixed race person in this world. Let’s allow bi-racial people to be…
Even if Meghan was black, it’s still embarrassing to say it’s a breakthrough that a black woman has married a British royal. If that was the case, we should be celebrating that Prince Harry is lucky to find himself a melanin goddess. Please, as a people, let’s have a bit of pride and self-worth. Why are we still slaves to white supremacy? Do we not have any ounce of self-worth and self-respect?
Let’s leave Meghan alone. She is not black, let that sink in each one of us. Let’s not insult her or her father. She is as much ‘white’ as she is ‘black’, she has said that that’s how she feels. There is nothing wrong with being happy for her, she has found love, but this has nothing to do with some sort of ‘breakthrough’ or ‘game changer’ for black Britons.
If you are one of those people who is celebrating Meghan being a ‘black woman’, maybe you need to be reminded who black people actually are. Google ‘Slave Trade In Libya’. Or go on CNN and search ‘black slaves in Libya’, then you may have a clear picture of what black people actually look like. It may also remind you of what black people go through in this world, especially those who are very dark. They have kinky hair and melanin-rich skin. And they are adequate enough in their afro hair and dark skin, they do not need to identify with people who are mixed race to feel worthy enough.
I understand Meghan has faced some racism and continue to receive mean remarks about her color even today, but that does not make her black. Just because there are some sick people out there abusing her for being mixed race doesn’t mean automatically she has to be black.
I will write this for the last time, Meghan Markle, the royal bride to be, is not a black woman. She is bi-racial. I will go as far as to say, technically speaking, in the eyes of God, her creator, Meghan is a white woman. She is identified by the seed of her father, making her white.

While I’ve agreed with you on the stupidity of black people worshipping any god and especially the gods of their slave masters and oppressors ( Jehovah and Yaweh), you have no power to define anyone, or their race, let alone claim that Megan Markle is white. People have the define themselves and census form’s in civilised societies allow people to do that by law.
What about the one drop of black blood rule that someone else arbitrarily made up? Would she or I get less of a kicking from the KKK because we are not ‘pure’ black as you presume you are? After the world’s invasions, rapes, pillaging by the likes of Genghis Kahn, Alexander the Great, the Arabs, the Vikings, Romans, and the rest mixing their blood and then invading Africa for thousands of years, plus the Transatlantic slave trade and subsequent remixing of those previously mixed genes, what makes you think that so-called black (actually brown) people are pure?
Have you had your mitochondrial DNA tested to show you are pure and have no European mixtures?
If we Africoid people are superior beings just because we happen to be born with more melanin (and not by our educational qualifications), then how come those presumably bits of ‘inferior white trash’ were able to enslave our ancestors of purer African blood and build massive cities, banks, multinationals at our ancestors’ expense and still manage to keep us down today in 2018? Long before the Europeans came the Arabs, before them enslaved African people for over 1,200 years…..and it still goes on in Libya as Saudi Arabia. Bearing that in mind, what makes you think she is not worthy of being described as black and that you have the right to redifine her as white?

How dare any of you say she’s not black. My mom is black w green eyes & my dad is white blond blue eyed & in this country I am BLACK even though I am light w/green eyes. I have always been called that by black & white Americans.In England where my mom grew up after migrating from Jamaica (Dad is American)they call people like us half cast & thats what she will always be classified as whether we actually know if she agrees or not.
It is always an issue & whites & blacks will forever give US a hard time to some extent about not being white or not being black enough. And no her mom does not look mixed. I wouldn’t want to be in her shoes for $ but then again it could be her best Role yet.

I agree. Her father didn’t raise her, she was raced by her mother. Who went through the same struggles of raising Meghan. Meghan grew up in a black household. Then society claims Obama as being black yet he was raised by his white grandparents. This country is barbaric. One step forward and three steps back.

In America, the definition of race has changed continually along with political, social and economic demands of the dominant culture. For example, at one time the dominate culture promoted and made legal the 1/8th rule to define race. In other words, if you had 1/8 black blood, you were considered an octoroon and “negro”. By those standards, Meghan would be classified as a “negro”, colored or black. Given today’s sensibilities, Meghan has the right to self-identify as biracial or mixed. If we are to operate on what a person looks like; there are many black families in which there are white-looking, Hispanic-looking and black-looking people sharing the same last name, mother and father. Likewise, I know of bi-racial families in which the father is white and the children inherited their mother’s richly-present melanin. My point is that “race” is a concept that was developed to promote divisiveness and support socio, politico and economic oppression by a dominant group. At the end, our focus should be on the power of love that has the audacity to transcend the negative grip of race.

Or she is both and neither, or some combination. I am sure whatever she is and however she feels, on any given day, she is just that, and what concern is it of ours? Like Meghan I have a lit of Irish ancestry that causes fair skin and freckles, and my father is black American, and I don’t even stress out about my identity these days, beyond addressing the dreadful ODR that makes certain whites push mixed people in the black category, and makes certain black people pull us into the black category, whether or not we agree, the mixed race existence is not that hard as an adult, it’s just not, but figuring identity in childhood for many of us was tough. Wonderful real/actual black people should not claim Meghan, she should not be the new black, but the ODR says she is, and she will always be preferred over real/actual black women, which is wrong!

So true. Even if she was black, the fact that she is getting married to Harry means nothing for black people in Britain. We will still be the poorest in the nation. The US had a “black” president for 8 years. It made no difference to the socio-economic status of Black Americans. They are still the poorest people in their country.

You are correct! It doesn’t matter what color anyone is. The entire government could be made up of black people and nothing will change for the average black person. To bad you can’t figure out why! We ALL make our own way! YOU have to help yourself..no one is going to magically make you successful. Ask the Jews, Chinese, Jamaicans, Africans (from Africa). These above mentioned people have/are pulling themselves out of poverty by striving for excellence. Black Americans DONT do that as whole. Yes there are individuals who succeed but the majority of black Americans seem to think that someone is going to fix everything for them…life don’t work that way!!!! This is the best blog I’ve been to for a while, and comments like this you won’t see other places. Each person must make there own way in life and is 100% accountable to do so, but you usually need support from others too, like family, friends, colleagues at work, or sometimes just that stranger who offers the perfect advice that changes your life. People I think usually do not make it alone, rarely. There is one type of person that I think people should not rely on, and that’s on random politicians and politicians in general – they are the worst, and get paid a lot of money to say buzz words, are overall either useless or harmful, and the way white liberals patronize people of color (I.e. “let me tell you how I, the great saviour, can save you). Ugh. It’s a no brainer that in life one must rely on their own wits, and anything else God gives them, such as personality, to make it in life. Africans do themselves great service by not adopting ebonics standards as well, for in America if you do not sound that smart when you speak, people will assume you are not and not want you around.

Not all mixed race people can even relate to the experiences of real black people, do not let looks decieve. Obama married a black woman, yes, but who was he intimate with before he began running for president? Do you think an Ivy League law school editor would relate to your average black American? Being mixed, can mean that you express white genes internally, mentally and emotionally, and I see no indication that Obama was even a real/actual black man, but something else unique, but not black.

Now if only others could respect Meghan’s actual/real race, as Meghan stated to the world already. I didn’t know about Meghan Markle’s race/not being white until I read her interview. For me, she is white because she looks nothing but white. It seems to me that it wouldn’t be very straightforward for a person to find their way to the Royal Family if they even didn’t look white.
It is the tradition, celebrating the long history of Britain that the Royal Family represents – unlike some tv shows, there is no point in making the Royal Family a showcase of the Nation’s ethnicities. After all, it is only one family, loved by the whole world as one of the iconic British things, along with London’s red buses, Trafalgar Square etc.
Black people in Britain should look elsewhere to improve their social & economic status.

If President Obama is/was considered black then so is she! Reality is that people who are mixed feel an intense pressure to be black and to shun the other side. That’s WRONG! I always thought that all these mixed kids would one day grow up and help bridge a gap in race relations but to date that isn’t happening. Instead as I said before people of mixed ethnicity feel that if they don’t act black enough that black people wont accept them. The writer of the opinion piece as well as a lot of posters have proven this point. You believe that somehow because a person doesn’t show their blackness they can be written off. Queen Sophie Charlotte was the Queen of England, here descendants are the present Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry. Queen Sophie Charlotte was an Africoid, a black woman, a mulatto. Therefore, FACT: the royal family are of MIXED-RACE! For me, history is repeating itself thru Harry and Meghan. On Meghan Markle’s Bi-racial Blackness.
Actually, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex (nee Meghan Markle) has claimed to be both Bi-racial and Black in a piece that she wrote back in 2015 for Elle Magazine.
Under the old American “One Drop Rule” she is considered Black in her own country not only by some mainly racist Whites but also by some Black activists too, – presumably in an understandable attempt to increase numbers.
The US “One Drop Rule”, which exists nowhere else in the world, only ever applied to Africans and was made for so called ‘National Economic’ reasons to cover the children of slave mothers and slave owners. It made it that “one drop of Black blood” categorised offspring as Black and therefore slaves no matter how dark/light they might be. Although originally a Law used by slave owners, it was enforced after the Civil War in some states in the US to prevent inter-racial marriages of a Black and White nature up until 1967!
We have never had the One Drop Rule in the UK and Slavery has never been legal in the UK itself (the Colonies were a different matter) since the Norman Conquest in 1066. Before the great encouraged influx of Black Immigrants from the West Indies in the 1950s and 1960’s, there had been quite a few tens of thousands of Blacks in the UK in previous centuries from the 1500s onwards (smaller numbers before then). These were free men & women and though many of them were employed as servants to rich merchants and aristocrats, some were soldiers, farmers, sailors, fishermen, shopkeepers, tradesmen, merchants and educated professionals. Many had always interbred racially, and by the twentieth century perhaps most of them had interbred with the indigenous White population becoming ‘invisible’. Thus, under the US One Drop Rule, many of today’s UK White population would be considered Black, – including the Queen herself and her children! Their Black blood dates back to the late 1700s (before the American Revolution) to Queen Charlotte, – the Bi-racial wife of African descent of King George III. She came via German Royalty from a branch of Portuguese Royalty that had Sub-Saharan African blood.
Ironic then that some of the White Supremacists in the USA may be ‘technically’ black

Those white women with “woolly” hair sold for a lot if money, and that is what some if the abolitionists reported on as well – you can find these old ambolitionist pamphlets that talk about the white slavery. Ok, now please, Megan’s Mother is a Nigro. Even though her Dad is not, her Mother’s Nigro blood runs through her vains, so she is part Nigro. Just because you marry a Prince, that doesn’t take your Nigro blood out of your body. Look at her nappy hair in that clip where she is in a nasty looking back yard playing Princess. If Meghan is black, she is the new black, and the real/actual black people what are they – and who cares about them anyway? Do you see my point? Clinging to beautiful mixed women because she has a little curl in her hair is undoing your own race, and Meghan and women like her are at the top, and dark women are at the very, very, very bottom. I pray to Heavens that you are nit a real/actual person if color, otherwise you would prove the author’s point about self-hating black people, which would be very, very sad. But self-hate is common in all races, especially mixed-race people, which us why I advocate for full acceptance of who you are, black, white, mixed, or what have you.

Honestly who cares. Just because someone says you’re something doesn’t mean that’s what you are. Sheesh..so over it and tired of it. If you have one race parent and another race you are half and half period… lemonade and tea half and half.. Peanut butter on one side jelly on the other makes it a pb and j not a peanut butter sandwich. Little Archie bless his little heart is pretty much a white child….his mom half white dad all white….no big deal…hes a little person who needs love like we all do. What’s wrong with everyone.
